The CAIRN Project
Coursework for American Indian and Rural Nascent
Abaetern Academy has received federal funding to create a prototype for online rural learning at the high school level for the purposes of increasing graduation rates among rural and Native American youth. The definition of nascent in this usage is "to arise: to take on one's rightful place".
Cultural Integration
Online courses built for the CAIRN project will integrate American Indian culture and themes into every course offered. Cultural content in all courses will be developed and evaluated by local tribal consultants. These consultants will be referenced within each course. This prototype of cultural integration will guide the reconstruction of all other courses taught by Abaetern.

Mastery Learning
Abaetern's courses use Mastery Learning techniques to give students the time to reflect and build knowledge and skills at a pace meaningful to their own lives. Our teachers are dedicated to each student's success. Because each person on this earth has an important and unique part to play, we encourage the continual discovery of that unique expression that enriches each community and our extended global home. We believe that within the Native Voice the leadership needed to heal our world community is found.
Quality of Learning
We believe the less time a student spends on the computer and the more time they spend actively learning in their community, the higher the quality of the course. Our students spend time listening to elders, participating in field studies with local community experts, and serving their family and friends with new-found skills.
The computer is merely a modern tool for interaction with state-certified teachers and for guidance in activities to fulfill local, state, and national standards. True learning takes place where the student resides. The computer and internet act as an instrument for bringing resources and guidance to that place in a manner that supports, not competes, with local learning.
