Mastery Learning

Abaetern Academy believes in a mastery learning model of instruction. In short, this means everyone masters the objectives of a course before they go on to the next course. This enables them to take on the next level of learning with confidence.

Mastery learning is a teaching philosophy that assumes the student can and will master course objectives if the proper instruction and guidance is offered and if the time required to learn is available. Students receive immediate feedback and personal attention in their studies while the teacher guides them through assignment revisions until a mastery level of understanding has been obtained.

Mastery learning gives the student the opportunity to master one level before beginning the next level. In mastery learning, there are only two assessment grades: A and I.

An A reflects that the student has mastered the material; an I shows they are still working on it. Before a course credit can be earned, a student must master the material; therefore, all students who finish a course have mastered the objectives and have earned an A.

Online learning's greatest asset is that it affords each student the amount of time they personally need for mastering different subjects. Students may learn at the time of day when their brain is at its best --no bells to break the student's concentration, no idle waiting for the next subject to begin. Learning time becomes extremely efficient.

Mastery learning is not new, but the oldest learning model we have. Would our parents encourage us to drive if we hadn't yet mastered walking?

Gone are the bell curves and the allowable losses; each student's learning is essential.
